A Sunday Reset for One

Sunday baking for one on a small kitchen counter, with a pink mixing bowl, a small round cake tin, eggs and a dusting of flour in morning sunlight

A Sunday reset for one is a short routine that gets your week ready and still leaves Sunday feeling like a day off. Mine comes down to cooking for the next two days, a small bake and a phone call to my family in the evening. There’s no cleaning in it, and that’s on purpose.

When you live alone, nobody else sets the rhythm of your week. That’s freeing, and some weeks it’s a little hard. A regular Sunday reset gives every week the same easy start.

What is a Sunday reset?

A Sunday reset is a set of small jobs you do on Sunday so Monday feels easier. On Pinterest it often looks like a full day of deep cleaning, fresh sheets, a big food shop and a long skincare routine. For one person with one day off, that’s a lot.

Your version can be much smaller. Pick the jobs that make your week run better, add one thing you enjoy and leave the rest for another day.

Do you have to clean on a Sunday reset?

No. I don’t clean on Sundays at all. I do a little during the week or get it done on Saturday, so Sunday stays free.

If cleaning tends to pile up, split it across the week:

  • One small job a day, like the bathroom on Monday and hoovering on Wednesday.
  • A ten-minute tidy before bed, so the morning starts with a clear kitchen.
  • Saturday for anything bigger, like changing the bed or a proper floor clean.

Once cleaning has its own time, Sunday can be about the week ahead.

How do you prep food for the week when you live alone?

On Sundays I cook enough food for the next two days. Two portions is a small amount to plan, and it means the start of the week is already sorted.

Two glass containers filled with a colourful home-cooked dish next to a pot on the hob, food prepared for two days

Dishes that keep well in the fridge for a couple of days:

  • a pot of soup or lentil dal
  • a tray of roasted vegetables with chicken or chickpeas
  • a pasta bake split into two portions
  • chilli or a stew, which often tastes better the next day

Let the food cool, then put it in the fridge in sealed containers within a couple of hours. Cooked leftovers are best eaten within two days, which is another reason two days works so well. For more on shopping and cooking in small amounts, read my guide to cooking for one without wasting food.

Why a small Sunday bake is worth it

My favourite part of Sunday is baking. I bake every Sunday, and I call it my little Sunday cake. It’s my small joy of the week.

Baking for one works best in small batches. A few ideas:

  • half a recipe of muffins or cupcakes
  • a small loaf in a 1lb tin
  • a mug cake when you only want one slice
  • small-batch shortbread with just three ingredients

Freeze what you won’t eat in a few days, and Wednesday gets a little bit of Sunday too.

Why call family on a Sunday evening?

Sunday evening is when I call my family to ask how they are. A fixed time each week makes the call easy to keep up, because nobody has to plan it.

A slice of homemade cake and a phone on a small table by the window on a Sunday evening, with fairy lights and a lilac dusk sky

If phone calls feel awkward, start short and keep them regular. I share more ideas in calling family when you live alone. And if family isn’t the right call for you, a friend counts too, and so does writing to a pen pal.

A simple Sunday reset checklist

Pick what helps. You don’t need all of it.

  • Look at your week: work, plans, anything to pay or book.
  • Check the fridge before your next food shop.
  • Cook for the next two days.
  • Bake something small.
  • Get Monday’s clothes and bag ready.
  • Charge your phone, laptop and headphones.
  • Put the bins out if collection is on Monday.
  • Call someone you love.

Some weeks you’ll only manage two things on the list. That still counts.

A few questions

What should a Sunday reset include?

A few jobs that make your week easier, such as food prep and checking your plans, plus one thing you enjoy. Keep it small enough to finish without losing the whole day.

How long does a Sunday reset take?

As long as you like. A short version with a look at your week and some food prep can take under an hour.

What if I work on Sundays?

Do your reset on whichever day you have off. A regular slot each week is what makes it work.

Is a Sunday reset good when you live alone?

Yes. When nobody else shapes your week, a small weekly routine gives it a clear start and something to look forward to.
